Criterion Repower Project in Oakland, MD

Project Overview

In 2023, JMS Energy undertook a significant repowering project in Oakland, MD, at the Criterion Wind Farm. This project involved retrofitting and rewiring 28 Clipper 2.5 MW turbines to GE 2.5 MW turbines, demonstrating JMS Energy’s expertise in handling complex renewable energy tasks. The project, commissioned by GE North America (NAM), highlighted JMS Energy’s ability to execute large-scale retrofitting operations with precision and efficiency.

Project Details

The Criterion Repower project was a comprehensive effort that required JMS Energy to work directly with GE NAM. The scope of the project was extensive, involving the complete deconstruction and reconstruction of 28 wind turbines. Each Clipper 2.5 turbine was carefully de-stacked down to the base can, a process that involved dismantling the tower, nacelle, and other critical components. This meticulous disassembly was necessary to prepare the turbines for the installation of the new GE 2.5 MW nacelles.

Key Accomplishments

  1. Cable Ladder and Cabling Installation: JMS Energy’s technicians were responsible for installing new cable ladders and cabling for the retrofitted turbines. This task was crucial for ensuring that the upgraded turbines could efficiently transmit power from the nacelle to the grid. The new cabling system was designed to support the enhanced capabilities of the GE 2.5 MW turbines, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.

  2. DTA Retrofit Assistance: In addition to cabling work, JMS Energy played a vital role in assisting with the Direct Turbine Adapter (DTA) retrofits. The DTA is a critical component that allows the new GE nacelles to interface with the existing turbine infrastructure. JMS Energy’s involvement in this retrofit process ensured a seamless integration of the new technology, minimizing downtime and ensuring that the repowered turbines met all operational requirements.

  3. Nacelle Preparation and Reinstallation: One of the most challenging aspects of the Criterion Repower project was the nacelle preparation and reinstallation process. JMS Energy’s technicians meticulously prepared each nacelle for installation, ensuring that all components were properly aligned and ready for integration with the existing turbine structures. Once the nacelles were ready, JMS Energy oversaw the reinstallation process, which required precise coordination and expertise to ensure that the new GE 2.5 MW nacelles were securely mounted and fully operational.

  4. Turbine Rewiring and Electrical Modifications: Following the reinstallation of the nacelles, JMS Energy’s team undertook the critical task of rewiring each turbine. This involved not only connecting the new nacelle to the turbine’s existing infrastructure but also implementing various electrical modifications to accommodate the upgraded technology. JMS Energy’s thorough approach ensured that each turbine was rewired to meet the latest industry standards, enhancing both safety and performance.

Impact of the Criterion Repower Project

The successful completion of the Criterion Repower project stands as a testament to JMS Energy’s capabilities in the renewable energy sector. By transforming older Clipper 2.5 MW turbines into modern, efficient GE 2.5 MW turbines, JMS Energy has helped extend the life of the Criterion Wind Farm and increase its overall energy output. This project not only highlights JMS Energy’s technical expertise but also underscores their commitment to advancing renewable energy through innovative and reliable solutions.
